The Thrill of Firsts: Embracing the Unknown

Whether it's your first time doing something or doing nothing, the “firsts” are unforgettable.

The first time doing anything can be nerve-wracking, but it can also be an exhilarating and rewarding experience. There's something special about the first day of anything, whether it's starting a new job, moving to a new city, trying a new hobby, or the first day at graduate school.

One of the most important things to remember when embarking on something new is to embrace the unknown. It's natural to feel a bit apprehensive about what lies ahead, but it's also an opportunity to push yourself out of your comfort zone and discover new things about yourself.

As an entrepreneur and serial self-learner, I get a kick out of doing something new. It's a thrilling emotion, similar to getting on a rollercoaster. The unknown, in many ways, fires me up with adrenaline to anticipate, prepare, study the context, plan, and jump right in.

Study: Do Your Research

One of the best ways to prepare for a new experience is to do your research. For example, if you're starting a new job, you may want to research the company culture, job responsibilities, and people you'll be working with. If you're trying a new hobby, you may want to read up on the basics and watch some tutorial videos to get a sense of what you're in for.

Manage Expectations

Another important aspect of starting something new is managing your expectations. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect right away. Remember that everyone starts at the beginning, and that it's okay to make mistakes and learn from them.

When the first day arrives (assuming you are expecting and prepared), try to stay calm and focused. Take deep breaths and remind yourself of the reasons why you decided to take on this new challenge. It's also important to be open-minded and flexible, as things may not go exactly as planned.

Try to soak up as much information as possible throughout the first day. Ask questions, take notes, and observe your surroundings. By doing so, you'll be better equipped to navigate the challenges that may arise in the days and weeks ahead.

Celebrate Your Accomplishments

Finally, remember to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. I am terrible at this, and it's an area I want to improve. The first day of anything is a significant milestone, and it's important to recognize your hard work and dedication. Treat yourself to a small reward, such as a favorite snack or activity, as a way to acknowledge your progress and motivate yourself for the journey ahead.

Go on and make it a first! You have to experience it to feel the full range of emotions. 

It's okay to feel excited or fearful when it comes to something we have never seen, done, or tried before. The firsts are unforgettable, for better or worse, regardless of the outcome.

Think about that first. That first kiss, first paycheck, first art project, first car, delivering your first work for a new client, first time falling in love, first time having sex, traveling on your own, first breakup, first resignation, first time learning something, or even the birth of your first child. What did you feel before, during, and after? What did you learn about that experience that has made you more self-aware, empathetic, and confident? 

In closing, the first time can be daunting, but it can also be a powerful opportunity for growth and discovery. By embracing the unknown, managing your expectations, staying calm and focused, and celebrating your accomplishments, you can make the most of your first day and set yourself up for success in the future.
